The future – what’s next
There are many opportunities to grow and improve the lives of local children and their families in this area. With your help we hope to develop in the following ways:
Sustainability
Sustainability is really important for the future of the project. We’re looking for ways of generating income so our community can thrive without always depending on donors. We’re exploring ideas such as – setting up a general store selling food, drinks and other essentials to the local campsites.
Day-to-day needs
We would like to provide simple filling food for our nursery pupils during the school day. Some young children regularly come to school without food.
Currently we provide uniforms, books and pens. We would like to be able to help with school boat fees, and school fees for local primary children.
Infrastructure
Build new toilets close to the nursery classrooms.
Create a level, fenced-in play area
Acquire more canoes – for school transport.
More volunteer accommodation – currently we have two rooms for volunteers and teachers to stay on the island. This isn’t always enough. We’d like to create one or two more rooms.
Create more classroom space. There are so many children who could benefit from our holiday school if we could create more classroom space to accommodate them.
The wider community
Water – we’d like to install a water pump and solar panels to pump water uphill from the lake.
Water filter – with a sand filter, families could have clean water without the need to boil it first.
A roof for the community motor boat – so that it can be used during the rainy season.
